 Searching for a keyword  

To search for a specific word or phrase, enter the word or phrase and press Enter or click the Keyword icon.

Note:  Hitlists returned from keyword searches can be sorted by clicking on any column header that has an underline.

On the Title Information page, each occurrence of the keywords is highlighted.

Example:  To search for items that have the word "rainbow" anywhere in their description, type rainbow. To search for items that contain the phrase "over the rainbow," type over the rainbow.

Unsure of the spelling?

Getting too many results? Use Limiters (click on 'Limiters')to narrow your search to a specific reading level or interest level.

If you're having trouble finding an item with the keyword search, try using another word or search method. If your keyword search produces too many titles, try a Power search.

After you've done a search and found a few books that you would like to look at --- what do you need from the results to locate the books on our shelves?

 

  • Call Number
  • Status (is the book available, or already checked out?)

Dewey Decimal System

HOW TO FIND A BOOK AT ALLEN LIBRARY

Books are arranged on the shelves in numerical order according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System, which divides all books into ten classifications with numbers as follows:

000-099   GENERALITIES: encyclopedias, periodicals, newspapers, etc.

100-199   PHILOSOPHY: esthetics, psychology, logic, ethics, etc.

200-299   RELIGION: Bible, theology, church, etc.

300-399   SOCIAL STUDIES: sociology, economics, law, education, dtc.

400-499   LANGUAGE: dictionaires, grammars, readers, etc., in all languages

500-599   PURE SCIENCES: mathmatics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, etc.

600-699   TECHNOLOGY: engineering, agriculture, business, etc.

700-799    THE ARTS: architecture, sculpture, painitng, jmusic, etc.

800-899   LITERATURE: poetry, drama and essays in all languages

900-999   HISTORY: general geography, travel, histories of all countries and ages.

FICTION:  Grouped separately and arranged alphabetically by the author's last name
